So what
is it like staying at the Southern River Bed &
Breakfast ?
"a
typical scenario "
Away from the bustle. By Nasus Rekab
“Home away from Home!” says the TripAdvisor
review. Gosnells is not exactly a tourist
precinct but I had some work to do in the area
and I soon discovered there is only one Bed &
Breakfast here in this South Eastern Suburb of
Perth Western Australia.
Booking in to the Southern River B & B is quick
and painless. No booking buttons nor form
filling. Just pick up the phone and speak to
the Owner. Now there’s a novel idea in this
technical age. I chose the single room with a
shared bathroom for $95 per night.
On arrival I was pleasantly surprised. With
easy access to major roads and highways, 30
minutes from the airport and free off street
parking, I was feeling at home already. Unlike
other B & B’s Southern River is a separate fully
self contained home. The hosts – Sue & Don live
next door which is great if you have an
additional requirements or just need information
on the local area.
Check in is simple. Each room has its own
key. Great!. I could come and go as pleased.
I followed Sue through the house - sitting
room, dining, kitchen – ahh fresh coffee smells
– Sue explained that breakfast is included in
the Tariff and there are supplies of cereal,
tea, coffee, milk, juices, yoghurts and fresh
fruit here. If I had any special requirements I
should just ask. .
Next is the TV room, where a young guy is
slumped on the couch, remote in one hand Iphone
in the other. Both hands tap tapping rapid
commands. Matt is down from the Wheatbelt to
attend a TAFE course. I couldn’t see a problem
sharing a bathroom with him. He is
in the double room at $130 per night. Sue
explained that he needed a larger room ‘to
spread out’. He seems to have already done that!
The guided tour continues through the hallway to
laundry, bathroom now my room, which has a king
single bed, bedside table, tv, built in robe,
bathrobe, towels and slippers. I
unpack my
bags and glance around, no frilly, flowery
décor here just tasteful, practical and
homely.
I set off back through the home to investigate
outdoors. Cathy and Bruce, a Canadian
couple visiting their son in Perth, pop out of a
doorway to my left. They are in the King Room
with ensuite. This is the most expensive
room here at $150 per night. I can see why – it
had a bed big enough to sleep a whole family!
Cathy says it was so comfy that they slept
in the first morning and missed their cooked
breakfast.
Situated in a quiet cul-de-sac the B & B is ‘far
from the hustle and bustle’ as promised online.
Happy noises are wafting from the pool and from
the patio, the sizzle of sausages and onions is
taunting me. I was going to eat out at one of
the many restaurants or café’s in Gosnells, but
Don offered me a snag and a beer as Cathy, Bruce
& Matt appeared through the door. Maybe a
pleasant night in is what I need right now!
